A working reference for
ceiling + lighting specification.

The standards stack.

Use the correct document for the question being asked. A photometric test standard is not a workplace design standard; a fire classification is not local authority approval; a protocol label is not proof of interoperability.

Visual + photometric

Workplace lighting BS EN 12464-1:2021

Current indoor workplace lighting standard. Use it for task, surrounding and visual-environment requirements, not as a luminaire product certificate.

Glare CIE 117:1995

Defines the Unified Glare Rating method. UGR depends on source luminance, position, background and room geometry; do not treat “UGR<19” as a fixture-only property.

SSL measurement ANSI/IES LM-79-24

Current IES method for measured optical + electrical performance of solid-state lighting products, including flux, intensity distribution, spectrum/color and power.

Photometric data ANSI/IES LM-63-19

IES electronic photometric data format. The file used in calculations must correspond to the submitted luminaire/optical configuration.

Color rendition ANSI/IES TM-30-24

Reports fidelity, gamut and hue-specific shifts. Use Rf/Rg and the color vector graphic when color quality matters; CRI alone does not describe gamut or hue direction.

Non-visual light CIE S 026/E:2018

Defines α-opic metrology for ipRGC-influenced responses. If circadian performance is claimed, review melanopic/α-opic quantities rather than relying on CCT alone.

Controls + emergency

Digital lighting control IEC 62386 / DALI-2

DALI-2 certification is based on IEC 62386 and adds tested interoperability for control gear, application controllers and input devices.

Colour control DALI Device Type 8

DT8 includes colour-control types such as Tc for tunable white. Specify the actual colour type, not just “DALI tunable white”.

Luminaire data D4i Parts 251 / 252 / 253

D4i can expose luminaire asset data, energy reporting and diagnostics/maintenance data. Useful only if the design actually intends to consume that data.

Emergency performance BS EN 1838:2024

Current emergency-lighting performance standard. The 2024 revision changes escape-route treatment, including illumination across the total width.

Emergency system EN 50172:2024

Covers installation, verification, operation, maintenance documentation and testing of emergency escape lighting systems.

Temporal light PstLM / SVM

Request flicker and stroboscopic metrics from the submitted driver/luminaire combination, and review behaviour at relevant dimmed states where the project depends on deep dimming.

Ceiling + material performance

Reaction to fire BS EN 13501-1:2018

Harmonised reaction-to-fire classification for construction products. Review the exact tested product/system and classification report, then confirm current local authority acceptance.

Absorption test ISO 354:2003

Laboratory method for measuring sound absorption in a reverberation room. An “acoustic membrane” claim should reference a tested build-up, not only the membrane name.

Absorption rating ISO 11654:1997

Rates sound absorbers for buildings from measured absorption data. Confirm the tested perforation, backing, cavity and absorber assembly matches the proposal.

Local approval UAE Civil Defence / local authority

Fire test evidence and EN classification do not replace the project’s local approval route. Verify current DCD/ADCD or relevant authority requirements before tender lock-in.

LED maintenance + fibre optics

LED maintenance test ANSI/IES LM-80-21

Measures flux and color maintenance of LED packages, arrays and modules under controlled conditions.

LED projection ANSI/IES TM-21-21

Projects long-term flux maintenance from LM-80 data and sets limits on extrapolation. Ask what lifetime claim is actually based on.

Fibre geometry Manufacturer-specific data

Minimum bend radius, common-end capacity, tail length and optical output are product-specific. Do not copy generic bend-radius rules into a specification.

Fibre safety principle Remote illuminator

The fibre carries light, not electrical current, to the emitting point. The illuminator remains electrical equipment and must still be located, protected and accessed correctly.

Edition/status shown here reflects research completed September 2026. Contract documents, authority requirements and current published editions at project issue date take precedence.

Submittal audit.

What should be present before a technical submittal is treated as reviewable and what should stop the review if it is missing.

Architectural lighting , minimum evidence.

Photometric evidence

LM-79-24 report or equivalent accredited-lab report; IES/LDT file matching the exact optics and output submitted.

Hold if photometry is generic or from another optic.
Color

CCT, chromaticity tolerance/SDCM, CRI/R9 where specified, and TM-30 Rf/Rg + vector graphic where color quality matters.

Hold if only “CRI>90” is provided for a color-critical space.
Driver

Exact driver manufacturer/model, protocol, dimming method, minimum dim level, emergency option if applicable and compatibility with the luminaire load.

Hold if driver is “or equivalent”.
Temporal light

PstLM/SVM or project-required flicker evidence for the submitted driver/luminaire combination; review dimmed-state behaviour if deep dimming is critical.

Hold if flicker is claimed “flicker free” without metrics.
Lifetime basis

Clarify whether the claim is LED-source LM-80/TM-21 projection, luminaire-level test, warranty period, or a marketing life figure.

Hold if “50,000 h” has no stated basis.

Stretch ceiling , minimum evidence.

Exact system

Membrane product, finish, thickness, profile/fixing family, edge detail, seaming strategy and maximum panel logic.

Hold if the finish is named but the system is not.
Fire evidence

EN 13501-1 classification report for the proposed product/system plus current project/local authority acceptance route.

Hold if only a brochure classification is submitted.
Backlit cavity

LED type/optic, pitch, cavity depth, reflector/cavity finish, membrane transmission/diffusion layers and accessible driver strategy.

Hold if uniformity is claimed without geometry or mock-up basis.
Services + access

Coordinated details for sprinklers, detectors, diffusers, speakers, access hatches, curtain pockets and serviceable equipment above the membrane.

Hold if penetrations are deferred to site.
Acoustic claim

ISO 354 test and ISO 11654 rating for the tested perforation/backing/cavity/absorber build-up if acoustic performance is specified.

Hold if only “acoustic membrane” is stated.

Fibre optic lighting , minimum evidence.

Fibre type

End-emitting vs side-emitting; PMMA vs glass; fibre diameter/active core; jacket and environmental suitability.

Hold if the drawing says only “fibre optic cable”.
Routing limits

Manufacturer-published minimum bend radius and maximum practical run/tail length for the exact fibre product.

Hold if bend radius is copied from another fibre size.
Illuminator

Model, optical output, common-end capacity, colour/CCT/RGBW configuration, control interface and thermal/ventilation requirements.

Hold if point count is specified without engine loading.
Maintenance

Accessible engine position, harness routing, connector access and replacement route without dismantling the finished surface.

Hold if the remote source becomes inaccessible after closure.
Wet areas

Keep electrical equipment in the compliant location; verify fibre/jacket suitability and all project-specific wet-area electrical requirements.

“No electricity at the point” does not remove system-level compliance.

Lighting controls , minimum evidence.

Architecture

Single-line/control topology identifying buses, power supplies, application controllers, gateways and integration boundaries.

Hold if “DALI” is the entire controls description.
Certified devices

Verify relevant DALI-2/D4i certification where required and confirm the submitted device types match the intended functions.

Hold if protocol support is asserted only in marketing copy.
DT8 colour

State the required DT8 colour type — Tc, RGBWAF or xy — and verify driver/luminaire implementation matches it.

Hold if “tunable white” has no control method.
Commissioning data

Addressing schedule, groups, scenes, sensor logic, time schedules, gateway mapping and change-control method.

Hold if commissioning is deferred without deliverables.
Handover

Zone drawings, scene descriptions, credentials, backup/configuration files and maintenance access to gateways/controllers.

Hold if the client cannot operate or recover the system.

Do not acceptthe phrase.Ask for the evidence.

These are common specification phrases that sound technical but are incomplete unless the calculation, test method or exact submitted configuration is defined.

01 “UGR < 19”

UGR is evaluated for a room, observer position and luminous environment, not simply stamped onto a luminaire.

Request the photometric file and review the UGR calculation in the actual room geometry. CIE 117 defines the UGR method; standard UGR tables are based on defined reference conditions and should not be mistaken for a universal room result.
02 “CRI 90+”

Useful, but incomplete for color-critical work.

Where color quality matters, ask for TM-30-24 information: Rf, Rg and the color vector graphic/hue-specific shifts. CRI and R9 may still be project requirements, but they do not describe the full gamut and hue behaviour of a source.
03 “50,000 hours”

Ask whether this is source maintenance, product life, warranty or projection.

LM-80-21 measures maintenance of LED packages/arrays/modules; TM-21-21 provides a method for projecting long-term flux maintenance from LM-80 data and places limits on extrapolation. Neither automatically equals installed luminaire service life.
04 “DALI compatible”

Protocol naming does not define device roles, colour type, interoperability or commissioning.

Identify the IEC 62386/DALI-2 device functions, certification status where required, DT8 colour type if applicable, gateway architecture, addressing and commissioning deliverables.
05 “Acoustic membrane”

Performance belongs to the tested assembly.

Request the ISO 354 test arrangement and ISO 11654 rating for the exact perforation/backing/cavity/absorber build-up. A different absorber, air gap or membrane configuration may not reproduce the published result.
06 “Fire rated / approved”

Separate classification evidence from local authority acceptance.

EN 13501-1 is a reaction-to-fire classification route for construction products. The classification report should match the exact product/system submitted, and the project still needs the applicable UAE/local Civil Defence approval path.
07 “Flicker free”

A marketing phrase is not a temporal-light metric.

Request PstLM/SVM or the metrics required by the project/regulation for the actual driver/luminaire combination. If the design depends on dimming, review temporal-light behaviour at relevant dimmed states too.
08 “Uniform backlight”

Uniformity is a system geometry problem.

LED pitch, optic, cavity depth, cavity reflectance, membrane transmission/diffusion, edge conditions and driver output all interact. Do not approve the phrase without coordinated geometry, calculation and/or a representative mock-up.

Deep technical notes.

Stretch / Optical

Backlit membrane uniformity

There is no universal module-pitch-to-depth ratio that should be copied between systems. Optical distribution, LED pitch, cavity depth, reflector finish, membrane transmission and edge conditions must be assessed together. When appearance is critical, the approval route should include a representative mock-up at the actual cavity depth.

Unidecors capability brief / project mock-up basis
Lighting / Visual comfort

UGR is a room calculation

UGR depends on source luminance, solid angle, position index and background luminance. Manufacturer tables are useful reference data under standardised conditions; they are not a substitute for evaluating the submitted luminaire in the actual room and observer geometry.

CIE 117:1995 · BS EN 12464-1:2021
Lighting / Color

Use TM-30 when color matters

TM-30-24 reports overall fidelity (Rf), gamut (Rg) and hue-specific fidelity/chroma/hue shifts. This is more diagnostic than CRI alone. Keep CRI/R9 where the project requires them, but use TM-30 to understand what the source is actually doing to color.

ANSI/IES TM-30-24
Lighting / Non-visual

CCT is not circadian performance

CIE S 026 provides α-opic quantities for light affecting the five photoreceptor classes involved in ipRGC-mediated responses. A “6500 K daytime / 2700 K evening” narrative is not, by itself, a circadian-lighting calculation.

CIE S 026/E:2018
Controls / DALI

Specify the DT8 colour type

DALI DT8 is not one single colour-control behaviour. Tc addresses tunable white along the black-body line; other DT8 colour types include RGBWAF and xy. The control gear, application controller and luminaire implementation must agree on the intended type.

Controls / Data

D4i only helps if the project uses the data

D4i adds standardised luminaire, energy and diagnostics data functions. If asset management or energy reporting is a project objective, define who reads the data, where it is stored and what the handover contains; otherwise “D4i-ready” adds little operational value.

Lighting / Evidence

Match the calculation file to the submitted optic

LM-79-24 defines measured SSL performance; LM-63-19 defines the IES photometric file format. The calculation is only meaningful if the photometric file corresponds to the exact submitted luminaire, optic, output and configuration.

ANSI/IES LM-79-24 · LM-63-19
Lighting / Lifetime

Source maintenance is not luminaire life

LM-80 measures LED source maintenance under controlled conditions and TM-21 projects long-term flux maintenance from that data. Installed product life also depends on driver life, thermal conditions, seals, optics, controls and the actual operating profile.

ANSI/IES LM-80-21 · TM-21-21
Lighting / Life safety

Emergency lighting changed in 2024

BS EN 1838:2024 updated escape-route requirements, including treatment across the total width. EN 50172:2024 addresses installation, verification, operation, maintenance documentation and testing. Coordinate these with the project’s local life-safety code and authority requirements.

BS EN 1838:2024 · EN 50172:2024
Stretch / Acoustics

Acoustic performance belongs to the build-up

ISO 354 measures absorption in a reverberation room; ISO 11654 rates absorbers from that data. For microperforated stretch systems, review the tested membrane, perforation, air cavity, absorber and mounting arrangement as one assembly.

ISO 354:2003 · ISO 11654:1997
Stretch / Compliance

Classification is not the whole approval route

EN 13501-1 provides reaction-to-fire classification for construction products. The consultant should still verify the exact product/system report and the current local Civil Defence/authority acceptance required for the specific project and emirate.

Fibre optics / Routing

Bend radius is product-specific

Published fibre-lighting products show materially different minimum bend radii depending on construction and size. Use the exact manufacturer’s value. End-emitting and side-emitting fibres also behave differently: side-emitting systems intentionally lose light along the run and can be more length-sensitive.

Fibre optics / Wet areas

Remote light source changes the risk, it does not remove compliance

The fibre carries light to the endpoint, so there is no electrical current in the fibre at the emitting point. The illuminator, connectors and any controls remain electrical equipment and must be located, protected and accessed in accordance with the project’s wet-area requirements.
