The technical problem became the design system.

The constraint

The interior design called for an atrium ceiling with no perceptible seam across a 19.4-metre clear span, while the MEP layout required 46 sprinkler heads, 12 smoke detectors and four access hatches to sit within the same plane.

Conventional panelised membrane would have introduced a weld line every 3.2 metres, visible under grazing light from the facade glazing.

The response

We specified a wide-format translucent membrane welded off site into a single sheet and set out the perimeter profile against a laser survey taken after the slab was poured, not from the design model.

Services were resolved into magnetic drop-in bezels colour-matched to the membrane, and the backlit cavity was set at 420 mm with a diffuse white return to hold luminance uniformity above 0.7 across the field.
